A new business in Thame is providing a new way to digest food and information to support your good gut bacteria.

The Thame-based start-up, BellyBiotics, has something new for the subscription box market to help tackle the lack of prebiotic awareness. A combination of snacks, drinks, meal ingredients plus a monthly magazine, all curated to help you learn more about prebiotics and other gut-supporting compounds in food. Each month, a new subscriber to their newsletter will win their first box for free – whether they buy a box or not. Their newsletter provides ongoing gut health and prebiotics-related news, info, inspiration and more. Their goal is to raise awareness of the connection between food and the health of your gut bacteria.

The Founder, Laura Fellows, who is also the custodian of Thame.net, says ““We aren’t aiming to turn people into food scientists, but we are hoping to help people think more about what they eat. We’ve done it for ourselves and we feel fantastic. Making a shift in food choices is much easier when you get a box each month that gives you products to try, recipes to use them in, practical tips and information – plus a smidge of the sciencey stuff too. That’s what we were looking for, and we couldn’t find it – so here it is, we created it for ourselves to share with the world.”

Laura and fellow Director Sue, have both experienced health issues and have connected over a love for understanding the relationship between food, our gut, biochemistry and our overall health.

The following is an extract from their recent Press Release:

You’ve probably heard the advice to eat more fibre, eat the rainbow and other healthy eating tips. And you’ve probably seen the increasing number of adverts for PRObiotics. But how familiar are you with PREbiotics? Prebiotics are the ‘food’, or fertiliser if you like, for your gut. Important stuff. And yet most of us don’t eat enough variety of prebiotic-containing foods to maintain a healthy gut ecosystem.

Gut health is an exciting and evolving area of science – it seems to be in the news every week at the moment. And for good reason. There’s increasing research into the connection between gut health and almost any disease or condition you can think of. Some connections are more proven than others but the research is only getting better.

What we do know for sure is that our good gut bacteria play a role in our health and they need a variety of specific foods to thrive – mostly prebiotics. When prebiotics are broken down by bacteria, they produce all sorts of good stuff such as vitamins, short-chain fatty acids, enzymes and so much more. These products of prebiotic fermentation are called postbiotics.

Sound like too much science? The BellyBiotics boxes are designed to take information about gut health and pair it with hand-picked products to help you learn while you increase the range of prebiotic foods you eat. The magazine also covers other areas around gut health in monthly features. Each month has a theme and subtheme designed to support ongoing learning about food and the different ingredients that can support good gut bacteria. As well as information, there are recipes for people who like to get creative in the kitchen, and practical tips for anyone wanting to save time or money but still eat a prebiotic-rich diet.
