It’s become increasingly tricky to know how to dispose of old items such as mattresses, fridge freezers, paint and other household items. OCC have an online waste wizard tool to help us get it right.

When you use the waste wizard, the suggested disposal options are listed from most to least environmental which helps you make greener choices about your waste disposal. You also get shown information about alternative uses and organisations that take certain items.

Using the Waste Wizard helps you to see:

  • How to dispose of items
  • Where to dispose of items
  • Which disposal options are greener than others
  • Whether district councils collect items

All you do is enter your postcode (with a space in it), enter the items you want to know about disposing of and press go.

I gave it a go with a few common searches e.g. duvet and this is the information I was given:

Firstly, I was given a link to Oxfordshire Recycles – top marks.

Then I was presented with the suggestion of refreshing old duvets instead of buying new – again, top marks.

Then there was information on a Rescue Directory so the duvet in question could be used in a local rescue centre – more top marks.

I was then given information about disposing of the duvet as waste – which type of waste it is, how they collect it and where I can take it (with a supporting map).

There is also a link at the bottom which allows you to send in information about missing items or inaccurate data.

What a great online tool! It’s great to see support for us normal folk who get confused about how to dispose of waste in Oxfordshire.

Go and give it a go for yourself.
