Thursday 4th May, local elections, will be the first time votes are expected to take photo ID with them to polling stations.

Local elections aren’t the only type of election needing photo ID from now on. The same will apply to Local elections, Police and Crime Commissioner elections, UK parliamentary by-elections and recall petitions. And from October 2023, the same will also apply to general elections.

If you don’t have the right photo ID then you can still vote but you’ll need to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline for applications is 5PM on 25th April. You can apply online or via post and will need your name, date of birth, address and National Insurance number to hand.
