Rotary Club of Thame & District is calling on all community and environment minded people to register in advance to join an online meeting about volunteer opportunities with Rotary on Wednesday 26th May 2021 at 7 pm. Marius Hopley, the District Governor of Rotary District 1090 in the Thames Valley, will give the talk. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about Rotary, how Rotary members give back to the community, Rotary’s areas of focus and how to join Rotary. The talk will alternate with breakout 5 minutes session when participants will discuss in groups of 3-4 various community topics suggested by the speaker.

One of the key areas covered by Marius Hopley will be Supporting the Environment which will become Rotary’s 7th area of focus as from July 1st 2021 with new Rotary year 2021-2022. Supporting the Environment joins peacebuilding and conflict prevention; disease prevention and treatment; water, sanitation, and hygiene; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; and community economic development.

Marius Ciortan, Thame & District Rotary spokesman said: “I would like to encourage all environment and community-oriented people to join our Rotary Unplugged. Due to the closeness to the Chilterns area of outstanding beauty, I believe we have a fantastic opportunity to develop projects centred around the Environment, Rotary’s new focus area. Our Phoenix Community Club, an offspring of Thame Rotary, has already been involved in local environmental projects. We would need more volunteer members to support this new exciting Rotary area of focus.”

Phoenix Community Club has taken on an Environmental project with Thame Wombles and is planning another day with them. They have also arranged a day working on the nature reserve at Cuttlebrook in Thame. Phoenix has also forged links with those involved in Thame Green Living Plan. Additionally, Phoenix has also been in touch with all the local schools sharing the opportunity for them to take part in the Rotary Environmental Poster Competition.

During the time of the pandemic, Rotary Club of Thame & District and Phoenix Community Club members have continued supporting the local community, have been meeting safely online and have been welcoming 10 new members since March 2020. The clubs’ doors are largely open to welcome new volunteer members.
