05/03/12….They’re ‘mad about books’ at St Joe’s
St Joseph?s Primary School in Thame marked the 15th World Book Day on Thursday, March 1, with a week long focus on books to celebrate the fun of reading.
Kicked off by a visit from the children?s author Heather Butler, ?Book Talk Week? saw teachers and children sharing their favourite books and stories through a range of activities.
From designing their own bookmarks to making Roald Dahl?s Mrs Twit’s eyeballs, the whole school took part in a book review competition.
Every child in the school discussed their chosen books with their classmates and other years before writing a book review with the best in each class winning a book token.
“The children really enjoyed thinking about their favourite stories and describing them to each other, and finding out what interested others and why,” said Claire Kerr, Headteacher at St Joseph?s.
The week of fun was rounded off on Friday when the school’s seven year-olds brought Roald Dahl to life by performing an Oompa Loompa themed assembly.
NB The main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own (www.worldbookday.com)
