Thame Mayor helps Rotary
THAME’S Mayor, Jeannette Matelot Green, joined local people at the Rotary Club of Thame’s Welcome Breakfast, held at the Spread Eagle Hotel, on Saturday (07/11/09).
The event was part of the “Join Rotary and Make a World of Difference” campaign by Rotary Clubs all over the UK and the Republic of Ireland inviting local communities to find out about the good things Rotary does for them and the international community, and to encourage more people to join.
Rotary’s “Join Rotary and Make a World of Difference” posters could be seen in many window shops in Thame and neighbouring villages in the lead up to the event.
The Rotary Welcome Breakfast included a talk by Peter Todd, Thame Rotary Club’s President, who explained what Rotary is and how the Thame club has supported local and international causes for the past 41 years, including Shelterboxes, a scheme run by Rotary which provides tents and safe drinking water and welfare items for victims of natural or man-made disasters anywhere in the world.
The scheme was launched in Thame earlier this year and received enthusiastic support from the people of Towersey who watched a short talk by Rotarian, Erroll Bateman, followed by a video about Shelterboxes, which was set up by Rotarians from Cornwall back in the year 2000.
Peter Todd said: “The number of people who wanted to know more about Rotary was above our expectations. With new people on board we will be in a better position to support this year’s local and international causes: Thomley Activity Centre and the Thames Valley Air Ambulance Service, as well as Shelterboxes and others. All those who wish to find out more about our club and were not able to come last Saturday should contact us via our web-site: “a href=http://www.thame.rotaryweb.org”target=”_blank”>LINK
and we will be more than happy to welcome them at one of our Wednesday evening fellowship meetings.”
