Big recycling reminder for small electrical goods (Status: press release)
WASTE experts from Oxfordshire County Council will be on hand to remind people that small electrical items can now be recycled at each of the county?s Waste Recycling Centres, at special events in April.
Staff will spend a day at the centres on April 5 and 12. They will hand out leaflets explaining that items such as clocks, games consoles and hairdryers can be brought to the recycling centres, where they go into separate containers for recycling. Large items, such as fridges and washing machines, are already accepted at the recycling centres.
Staff will be dressed in deep pink, the colour local authorities use to denote electrical items at their recycling centres, and the containers will be marked with pink balloons to help residents spot them.
The leaflet gives more examples of what electrical items can be accepted at the recycling centres, as well as answering questions such as: ?What about light bulbs?? and ?Who pays for all these items to be recycled?? It also asks people to think about the environmental consequences before replacing their gadgets, by upgrading or buying a refurbished product instead.
Where are the recycling centres?
The following recycling centres will be visited on April 5
Alkerton (nr Banbury),
Ardley Fields (Ardley),
Dean (nr Chadlington)
Redbridge (Oxford city) will be visited on 5th April.

The reminder follows changes to Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations that came into force in 2007 and aims to tackle the growing amount of waste electrical and electronic items that is thrown away.
The regulations affect everyone who uses, sells, treats or disposes of WEEE, by setting targets for recycling and making producers pay for treating and recycling end-of-life electrical equipment.
Funding to promote the recycling of electrical items has been provided by the Government through the Oxfordshire Waste Partnership, which is made up of Oxfordshire’s district councils and Oxfordshire County Council.
Councillor Roger Belson, Oxfordshire County Council?s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, said: ?The more items that people can recycle the better. Obviously if some people are still unaware that it is now possible to recycle small electrical items then we need to inform them. Hopefully these events will do the trick and raise awareness.?
