Chinnor Seconds Win Cliff Hanger To Win League
IT was soon obvious that there was no love lost in this local derby played between two very competitive teams on Saturday.
Chinnor Seconds won by just one point against Oxford Harlequins winning them the league on points difference, denying the title to the Harlequins who needed only to draw to win the league.
Chinnor Seconds failed to play to their normal high standard, the forwards failing to gel for the first 15 minutes. As a result they were often found to be on the back foot and Oxford Harlequins took an early lead from a penalty. Chinnor then scored under the posts in the 18th minute with a great run by Jamie Hiscock from his own goal line, converted by Adam White.
The Quins hit back five minutes later with a push- over try. Chinnor then settled down and Adam White scored and converted his own try, followed two minutes later by a second try from Jamie Hiscock duly converted by Adam White. He then followed this up with a successful penalty and Chinnor were 24 points to eight ahead.
Once again Jamie Hiscock took the opportunity to out-run the Quins’ backs to score under the posts and Adam White was once more on target and the first half finished 31 points to eight in Chinnor?s favour.
In he second half, the Quins had the wind behind them and came back at Chinnor with tries scored in the fourth and the 16th minutes but only converted once the score was only 31 points to 20.
Chinnor was blown out of the game when it tried to set up any second or third phase play, which the team had found great success with previously throughout the season. As a result it spoiled a very good and hard game, which affected the players on both sides. These frustrations lead to the sending off of one of Chinnor?s front row, and Quins ran in two tries during the fifteen minutes the player was off the field.
With just 10 minutes to go, the scores were 31 points to 30 in Chinnor’s favour. They were very relieved indeed to finish the game without conceding any more points.
The team would like to thank Oxford Harlequins for a very close game, and one they were very delighted and thankful to win.
The man of the match was Jon Brooks picked out by the Quins Coach.
Finally, Chinnor second team captain, Tom Wood and manager Walter McGuicken would like to congratulate and thank all players who have played for the team this year and contributed towards the side winning the league.
