FOLLOWING a significant drop in the value of recyclable materials recently, local authorities are reassuring residents that all materials put out for collection are still being recycled.

Wayne Lewis, Oxfordshire Waste Partnership (OWP) coordinator said recently: “Markets for recyclable materials have historically been volatile and this is not the first time that we have seen prices fall. Our partner councils all have contracts in place to ensure materials continue to be recycled during the difficult times as well as during the good times. After the recent drop in prices for materials such as used metals and plastics, markets are beginning to show signs of stability. Councils will be working closely with their contractors to ensure Oxfordshire recycling rates remain high.”

John Tanner, who chairs the OWP, supported this position, stating: “Prices for raw materials go up and down. Local councils have fixed price deals so it is the contractors who take the risk. Recycling still remains a much much better option than landfill. We urge residents to keep recycling and we will guarantee to check that the contractors continue to recycle that waste.”

The OWP comprises:
? Cherwell District Council
? Oxford City Council
? Oxfordshire County Council
? South Oxfordshire District Council
? Vale of White Horse District Council
? West Oxfordshire District Council.
