Le Page Ensemble To Return To Thame (Contributed)

FOLLOWING the success of their concert in January and subsequent requests from an appreciative audience, the Le Page Ensemble will be returning to Thame for two further concerts at St. Mary?s Church, Thame.
The first concert on March 17 will include Mozart String Quartet in D minor K421 which is one of only two that Mozart composed in a minor key, and is one of the set of six quartets inspired by Haydn?s Opus 33 ‘Russian Quartets’ and composed after “long and arduous labour”. Mozart dedicated the set “to my dear friend Haydn” who readily acknowledged that they surpassed the works that had originally inspired Mozart.

Tchaikovsky?s String Quartet No. 1 in D, Opus 11, dates from 1871. It was written rather hurriedly for a concert of his recent compositions, the purpose of which was to supplement his meagre salary from the Moscow Conservatory. This quartet was the first of Tchaikovsky?s compositions to achieve widespread acclaim, particularly for the second movement, Andante Cantabile, which very soon took on a life of its own in many instrumental arrangements.

Partita No. 2 in D minor for solo violin by J.S. Bach is a set of five dance movements, culminating in the majestic and inspiring Chaconne.

The second concert on May 12, will include Elgar String Quartet Opus 83 in E minor, which was composed between 1918 and 1919 and premiered at the Wigmore Hall in May 1919. The quartet, simply a masterpiece, was written at the same time as the Violin Sonata and the Piano Quintet and shortly before the Cello Concerto and shows Elgar at the height of his creative powers.
Both concerts begin at 7.30pm
