- Tuesdays
The Market has been held on Tuesdays since 1230, the original site
being the Buttermarket and Cornmarket areas. The Buttermarket is
traditionally sited on the cooler north side, the Cornmarket on
the south. The area of Middle Row, which separates the two, originally
consisted of booths which were put up and taken down each week.
They were gradually replaced by more permanent structures, one of
these being the Birdcage.
The
Market is now held in the Upper High Street car park and is a bustling
and colourful affair accommodating approximately 42 traders. Merchandise
is many and varied and includes fruit and vegetables, clothes, underwear,
books, pictures, fresh fish, fabric, aromatherapy products, linen,
picked eggs, household goods, plants, handbags, pet foods, garden
ornaments, basketware, bric-a-brac and the very popular WI produce
stall.
Held
on the second Tuesday in the month through July to October 1999,
this pilot scheme is proving a great success. Come and taste and
savour the seasonal produce of the region, meet local farmers, growers
and producers, and enjoy a great day out in historic Thame.
Produce
available includes fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry and game,
organic and free range produce, baked goods and preserves, traditional
and regional varieties and local wines and beers. Dates for 2000
to be arranged.

Usually held in May, Thame's annual French Market started in 1998
and has proved hugely popular with locals and visitors alike. Genuine
French market traders sell a variety of goods from paté to perfume,
garlic to glassware, and of course, the inevitable French bread
and cakes. Events and activities are organised throughout the two
days, for example, le Jive lessons, wine tasting and a French style
café. Tel : 01844 212833 for more information.
