Royal British Legion - Meets every third Wednesday in the Month - Old Nags Head, Thame - 7.15pm for 7.30pm - Come and join us !
Wanted! Women and Girl Power have always under-pinned society Why? because we can be relied upon; because we are doers not watchers; because we hold families and groups of people together; because we are good organisers but most importantly because we VALUE one another.
Why should you know about the Royal British Legion Womens Section? because it is the LARGEST Ex-Servicewomens organisation in the country. Not only that, but it is the SECOND LARGEST womens organisation in the country! ANY woman over the age of 16 may join and is already has 70,000 members.
What will I have to do? Well, if you want to offer your support and encouragement, and your belief that in these endless days of conflict around the world, that it is women who should lead the way in supporting those left behind and in need of financial assistance and comfort then this is your opportunity to help both women and their children - you may already know of someone who is in this sad position. If you have some spare time and want to contribute to the running of this great 80-year old organisation, then this is your chance YOUR SKILLS ARE NEEDED.
VOLUNTEERS are the backbone of hundreds of local services around the country tin-rattling to raise funds to support local enterprise, meals on wheels, hospital driving, sponsorship for a new play park or school equipment, sponsorship for a friend running the marathon and raising funds for a very good cause you are likely to have contributed to a number of these already. So who does the administration at local level; who counts the money our volunteers and members. Perhaps you have the odd hour to spare and want to put something personal back into the community then you can as a member of the Womens Section.
Maybe you are fun-loving or perhaps a little bit lonely? Then join us and make many new friends, enjoy the companionship and the laughter you will not regret a single moment! Perhaps you are ex-Service and the ceremonial side of life and the uniform gave you that sense of belonging to a really respected organisation, then that is also available for those of you who are interested most of us just watch and admire.
HOW CAN I JOIN YOU? Telephone: 020 7973 7214 or Fax: 020 7839 7917 Email: lbunting@britishlegion.org.uk Website: www.britishlegion.org.uk

The Club derives its name from the "witchert"
walls for which the local area is famous. These
wattle and daub constructions ar e
built on a stone base, the "grumpling" and were
originally thatched to prevent
rain washing them away. Nowadays they are generally
tiled.

The
Lions Club of Thame & District
Current President
until 30th June 2004 is Alan Chandler
There are two meetings per month on the
first and third Wednesday. Meetings are
held at Racquets starting at 8 pm.
As
with all Lions Clubs we are affilated to
Lions Clubs International which is the largest
volunteer service organisation in the world.
Thame Club is part of District 105a covering
London north of the Thames up to Banbury
in Oxfordshire and east as far as Redbridge,
taking in Bucks and Hertsfordshire. District
105a is part of Multiple District 105 covering
the UK and Ireland. 105a is second in membership
to District 105i being the whole of Ireland,
with some 1800 members.
Lions raise money for all types of charitable
causes and none of the money raise is used
to support the clubs. The clubs are funded
by the members and their supporters.
The Lions are recognised for their work
with preventable blindness in fact Helen
Keller in 1927 challenged all Lions to become
Knights of the Blind and to work towards
eradicating preventable blindness. To this
end Lions Clubs International established
a fund known as LCIF which based on funds
raised by Lions Clubs worldwide donate towards
solving problems of blindness approximately
$40 million each year.
Lions was founded in 1917 by a Chigago Business
man named Melvin Jones and it is his name
that Lions can receive their highest honour
the Melvin Jones award.
As well as the international element all
clubs raise and distribute money to local
causes, these can be social
activities for the elder or disabled, to
providing man power for projects in the
community.
