Amnesty International (Link to UK site)

amnesty logoThe Thame group of Amnesty International meets on the 4th Wednesday of every month (except August and December) at 8.00pm in the upstairs room at the Swan in the Upper High Street. Anybody interested in the work of Amnesty is always welcome at these meetings.

Amnesty International is a worldwide human rights organisation which:

  • seeks the release of Prisoners of Conscience (people imprisoned solely for the peaceful expression of their beliefs)
  • campaigns for fair and prompt trials for political prisoners
  • and works for the abolition of torture and the death penalty in all cases.

The Thame group works for these aims by:

  • writing letters to overseas governments
  • fund-raising to support Amnesty's research and campaigning activities
  • organising public meetings and publicity to raise awareness of Amnesty's concerns
  • lobbying the UK government on related issues such as asylum seekers, links with other governments and the death penalty.

Alzheimer's Disease Society - Caring for Dementia.
Alzheimer's disease is the commonest cause of dementia. The term dementia covers a group of illnesses which cause a decline in the ability to remember, to think and to reason. The second most common cause is called multi-infarct dementia. And there are other rarer dementia. More than half a million people in the UK suffer from these diseases. Although Alzheimer's disease and the other dementias more often affect older people, they can effect people in their forties or even younger.
Forgetfulness and confusion which gradually get worse are the most striking symptoms. However, these symptoms can result from treatable illnesses, so a diagnosis is always necessary.

Looking after someone with Alzheimer's disease or any other type of dementia can be very demanding. If you are a carer or concerned about a relative or friend we can help. We can also help if you work with people suffering from dementia.

The Alzheimer's Disease Society...

  • Supports families
  • Gives information and advice
  • Presses on behalf of people with Alzheimer's disease and their carers for adequate benefits and a high quality of care etc.
  • Publishes booklets and fact sheets
  • Supports research
