The Star & Garter

WHERE can you find a pub with a real traditional, country pub atmoshere, that provides proper, English pub food, cooked with a passion for good grub, by a home-grown chef from Thame?

THE STAR AND GARTER - Owned and run by Richard and Claire Walker

The popular hostelry name, the 'Star and Garter' refers to the insignia of the chivalric Order of the Garter which, tradition tells us, was founded by Edward III when he rescued the Countess of Salisbury who was compromised by her garter falling off her leg in full view of the court! (The star was apparently added later as the blokes liked a sparkly bit that they could wear! ) There is an alternative account of the founding of the Order of the Garter within the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in which the Order is founded by King Arthur to include all of the knights of the Round Table in commemoration of the ordeal of Sir Gawain at the hands of the Green Knight.

You won't find roast swan or suckling pig at Thame's Star & Garter, but you will find traditional roasts every Sunday lunch time between 12 mid-day and 4pm (including landlord Richard's secret recipe Yorkshire pudding), as well as sandwiches and daily specials.

Food is available: Lunch - 12 pm to 2.30pm Tues, Wed & Thurs; Evenings: 6-9pm
Fri & Sat; 12pm-3pm & 5.30pm-9.30pm

ABOUT US -

Landlord, Richard Walker is Thame born and bred and is a chef by trade, as is his wife, Claire, who is a Londoner brought up in Potters Bar.
Since taking over the Star & Garter in November, the Walkers have decided to use local Oxford sausages, and Oxfordshire reared meat in their steak pie. They aim to work towards using locally grown vegetables in the future.

At the Star & Garter, customers will be met with a friendly welcome and a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere.
