THE planning committee of South Oxfordshire District Council has tonight (22/07) approved plans for a housing development on land at The Elms, in High Street, Thame.

Elms_meadow_house (500x335)After strongly argued and at times, passionate representations from Dr Paul Wynsom for The Elms Petition Group, Thame resident Adrian Reynolds,  Cllr Mary Stiles and Cllr David Dodds – all against the application, against professional and methodical representations from Rectory Homes spokespeople for the development, the committee voted 4 – 2 to approve the plans.

The committee also approved Landscaping and improvement works to Elms Park and Listed Building Consent for Works and alterations to gates and boundary walls etc, at The Elms.

Most memorable quotes of the evening:

(1) “You have just run rough-shod over Thame!” Adrian Reynolds
(2) “I just hope that when it is finished, the people of Thame will come to see the benefit.” Cllr Margaret Turner

More detailed coming soon.

  1. I wonder what this tells us about the Tories much vaunted policy of localism? When a unanimous vote by Thame Town Council and well argued presentations by our local representatives (Councillors Styles and Dodds) can be overridden by a remote council which has never had the interests of Thame people at heart, it makes you doubt the democratic process. The so-called debate in the council chamber had the passion of a wet lettuce (apologies to lettuce lovers), the intelligence of an amoeba and the vision of a sticky toffee pudding. Yes, we’ll get used to having a monstrosity over our garden fence, but it could have been so much better if profit was not the overriding motive. A modest number of cottage style homes could have enhanced the landscape, but these monstrosities, which breach the constraints of the Neighbourhood Plan the developer claimed to support, will be “a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much loved friend”.

  2. There should be a full independent enquiry as to how this land got onto the Thame plan in the first place.
